In English:

January 17 - Back Home in Sweden 🏡

The flight truly felt long and cramped. Phew, sitting for +9 hours on a plane is challenging ✈️. Sure, watching movies 🎥 is fun for a while, but after some time, the TV screen being so close, especially when the person in front leans their seat back, gives you a headache 😂 😾.

It was indeed a relief when we finally landed in Finland 🇫🇮, but less pleasant when we stepped off the plane and had to go to the bus – so cold 🥶, we only had fleece jackets and sneakers. Our flight from Delhi had landed an hour later than scheduled, but we were lucky as the flight taking us to Landvetter was also delayed 🍀. We were hungry and very happy about Sarita's Parathas that she had packed for us (Indian bread).

At Landvetter, our lovely neighbor was waiting for us and safely drove us home 🧡 🚙. Once home, we fell asleep after some time. 😴

On Saturday, the day after, the kids ran out and played in the snow ❄️ with their friends whom they had missed. I wanted to make a final video with Milo summing up our trip to India 🇮🇳, but it didn't go so well 🤭. Kids are fantastic at living in the moment. He was so happy about the snow and eager to run off and play with his friends that he didn't think much about India at that moment.

But if I were to summarize our 6 weeks in India, I'd say that our little family has experienced all the emotions a person can have during this time. Joy, tears, anger, laughter, surprise, disgust - yes, everything! There were also many tough moments when, as an adult, you have to find wise and calming words about why the world is so unfair to both humans and animals. For the whole family, it has been a significant reminder of how incredibly fortunate we are here in Sweden. We should remind each other of this when everyday life feels incredibly gray and dull at times.

That our little family has had the chance to experience India and all the adventures and emotions together has made us even more bonded. 🧡 We've been asked if we are now India Lovers 🇮🇳 or if we never want to go to India again. The answer is, of course, that we will return to India in the future; we have our Indian family there whom we love so much. But next time, we won't visit the major tourist attractions because we've already done that, and that's where we experienced the most challenging moments. But, of course, I want to go back and see the Taj Mahal at sunrise.

After the trip, the children have also become tougher, daring to take up space and speak up to strangers when they feel uncomfortable. They have become much braver at speaking English. They have truly grown during these six weeks. For better or worse, they have learned that the world outside of Europe is very different. But they have also learned that you can feel at home in any country if you are with loved ones. Milo has also gained a new Indian friend. It's fantastic to have friends from other countries.

What I will miss most from India is that you were always in the present moment. There was simply no time to sit and think about anything other than right here and now. An incredible feeling. Then I will miss the wonderful food. As a vegetarian 🌱, India is fantastic. I will also miss all the smiles from all the women I meet. Walking past many beautiful women every day who genuinely smile at you is an amazing feeling. I will miss that. Oh, I will also miss all the colors in India. All those colorful clothes, fabrics, and decorations. When you come home to Sweden, you are met with all the grayness; the weather is gray, everyone wears gray or black clothes, and then you truly miss India's colorful attire.

The whole family, and now also our daughter, is so grateful for our time in India. That the kids got time off from school, that we adults could take time off, and that we had the money for this trip. Are you curious about what it cost? We coughed up 150,000 SEK for this adventure. A life investment for the family!

Now, the family's next adventure will hopefully be bringing home a little Howavart puppy in July. Then our travel stories will be from Europe as we pack the dog and the kids in the caravan and hit the roads.

Now we say goodbye until next time. Our greeting to everyone is to be grateful for your everyday life and, when you can, contribute in some way to make others' daily lives better. It can be donating money, but it can also be contributing a smile to the person you meet on the street. 🌍 ♥️

You are an outstanding bargainer."

Glass i stora lass

But it soon faded away, and I had three friendly dogs lying around me while doing yoga. Unreal feeling to do yoga on a beach in Goa. It also felt a bit unrealistic for me to achieve the yoga I saw an older lady doing on the beach. Goodness, the old lady must have rubber bands for legs, impressive, but she must have trained her whole life on Goa's beaches. 🏝️ 🧘‍♀️

We packed all our bags 🧳 and took a walk to the fantastic breakfast place where we all get full, even Kira 🤭 On the way there, we went into some shops. Milo wanted to buy some stones, Hardy a T-shirt since he didn't have a clean one left, and Kira just wanted to look around. My talent for bargaining has reached its peak. At the beginning of our journey, I was kind and mostly thought that they need the money more than me. But now, after five weeks, the kind side has disappeared, and I've become so tired of constantly feeling exploited and cheated. After bargaining for Milo's stones, a local came up to me and said, "You are an outstanding bargainer." 😂 Milo has also made a little film about how to bargain in India. I'll post it later.

The taxi was waiting for us when we returned and then took us to Majorda. But not until it had to turn once to pick up a bag we forgot 😂 There are more and more bags to keep track of after the journey 😜

It's a very beautiful Home Stay that we've come to. As mentioned, a recommendation from our friend in Delhi who has style. We were a bit worried about how it would feel to leave fantastic Agonda Beach, but we're all very happy to have three days here. The kids play for hours in the pool 🏊‍♂️ until their lips are all blue. Then you've been in the pool for a long time since it's 30 degrees warm in the air 😹. The home is owned by a British couple with three generations behind them living in India. They also have several generations of Basset hounds on their property. Today, there is an old Basset who is almost blind but has an excellent sense of smell. He strolls around a bit everywhere and gets a friendly pat from the kids. They are getting a Basset puppy in 1-2 weeks. Too bad we're not here then because puppies are the cutest.

We went to the beach to see the sunset 🌅 and to have dinner at a Beach Shack. Oh, what a difference from the beach in Agonda. Here, it was full of action with a lot of people and activities. In the evening, the entire beach lit up with neon colors from all the Beach Shacks. On the water, there were banana boats 🍌 🚤, jet skis, and something like paragliding behind a boat 🪂 🛥️. We learned that the ringing on the beach meant a bicycle with ice cream 🍦 🚴‍♀️.

There were so many beach dogs here, and two of them sat down next to us at the dinner table on the beach. They looked very healthy, but it still hurts in the heart to see them. The daughter became very sad, and tears ran down her cheek. She thinks that all dogs should have a home and love 🧡 🐶. She is now determined that we should collect money 💴 and then we should go and help street dogs for at least a year. Absolutely, I said, I'm in.

What's nice about a Home Stay is that you can hang out in the whole house. It gives nice opportunities to find your corner and play games, like Hardy and Milo did well into the evening.

Tomorrow awaits a full vacation - doing almost nothing 😃 🌴 ☀️

Good night 😽

15 January -

Today we did as planned, to do nothing. For us, today's nothing was swimming in the pool, getting the world's best massage, hanging out by the pool, and eating. Eating dinner at the Home Stay, cuddling, and massaging the old dog. We also had time for a lot of games, taught the kids to play Blackjack, for example. 🃏 Time for homework 📕 It takes a lot of discipline to sit with homework when there are so many other fun things to do. Then I had time to catch up with the blog too. The most exciting thing today for Milo and Kira was to talk to their friends in Sweden.

Imagine that doing nothing can still make you so tired 🥱

Tomorrow awaits a day trip, so it's best to sleep now.

Good night 😴

16 January - not the family's best excursion today.

The morning started calmly, and then breakfast at the Home Stay. It's noticeable that there are probably mostly British guests here because it's Western breakfast that applies here, toast, scrambled eggs, baked beans, and here they also have porridge. In Goa, money goes fast because everything is twice as expensive, but it's the richest state in India with the highest GDP per person.

After breakfast, we took a taxi to a Spicy Farm. It wasn't quite what I had expected. I had imagined driving around the farm and seeing how they work, harvest - seeing what such a cultivation looks like. But that's not what we got at all. Instead, we had to walk a little path where there were specimens of the spices they have on the plantation. It was interesting to see how spices grow because we've never seen that.

Lunch was included, and it was very good. But for the kids, it was too spicy, after all, it's lunch on a spice farm 😂

Then our guide Hardy took us to Old Goa to see, among other things, Asia's oldest church. But that tour was not appreciated by 3/4 of the group 😜. Walking in the city and seeing churches in 32-degree heat 🥵 was not everyone's favorite. Back at the Home Stay, we took a dip in the pool.

We ate dinner outside our Home Stay since it's much cheaper and a bit more flavorful, as it's really UK-adapted 🇬🇧

Tomorrow, we're taking the flight to Delhi. It will be a dear reunion to see our Indian family. Whether it will be a dear reunion to see our home embedded in minus 18 degrees remains to be seen 🥶.

We had booked AC 1, which wasn't the best class, and our sleeping berths weren't next to each other. There were no seats, only sleeping berths 😹. In the beginning, the kids hated us because it wasn't at all the train 🚂/carriage they had imagined, and neither did the adults. The kids kinda hated us for the first 30 minutes and swore they'd NEVER go on vacation with us again. It's not the first time we've heard this during this trip 😂. But then, when I got hold of clean sheets and made our sleeping berths cozy with sheets everywhere, it actually became very comfortable, even by the kids' standards. The fact that they could relax and watch a downloaded movie 🎥 🍿 on the tablet helped a bit too 😜.

Then, a 10-hour train journey awaited us. But when the trip was over, we all said - as soon as possible ⏰. As always, things happen in India; it's never boring. We talked to people, bought chai that we were offered all the time, and had the best lunch, a "Train-derived Pizza." Seriously, these Indians are quick to deliver Amazon packages and fantastic at delivering food everywhere. There's an app that shows the restaurants along all the train stops. Then you can order food, and they bring it to your carriage. How fantastic is that? We all ate a very good pizza 🍕.

Looking out during this train journey was a different experience than in northern India. Here, it was mostly peaceful to see the landscape whiz by without seeing as much misery as we saw during the train journeys in northern India 🇮🇳.

Oh, I almost forgot to tell you that on the train, we met a Swedish/Indian family who was also on a trip. The kids thought it was nice to listen and speak Swedish 🇸🇪.

Upon arriving in Goa, a taxi awaited us, arranged by the hotel. We didn't see much on the way because it was dark, but when we arrived at the hotel, we heard the waves of the sea. And it was to these waves that we fell asleep. 🌊 😴.

12 January: Goa Beach, Milo chased by dogs

Good morning. My goodness, it's not often you wake up to the sound of waves and look out to see the sea right in front of you. We have a wonderful accommodation right by the beach. I mean, an absolutely fantastic accommodation; what luxury and what tranquility.

But poor Milo didn't have a calm morning. He wanted to go down to the beach by himself to feel the water before breakfast. Then we heard a scream, barking, and we saw our poor son being chased by eight street dogs. Fortunately, there was a hero on the beach who took care of Milo and chased away the dogs. It took the whole morning to calm Milo down. But with a lot of ice cream, watching funny videos, the unpleasant incident disappeared from his mind.

Now when we go on the beach again, he is thankfully not afraid of the dogs. It's a good thing because there are a lot of dogs here. But they are all quite chubby. They get food from the restaurants along the beach. In the evening, we've heard a lot of barking and dog fights. It's really a fight for life and death. Very sad to hear the dog in distress. But we can't do anything.

What we can do, however, is feed the cat that has found refuge on our balcony. We give it food and water and hope everything goes well for it. It looks well 🐱 🙂.

Hardy, our excellent guide, has found a fantastic breakfast place for us. You can really tell that Goa is for tourists because we're not talking about Indian breakfast, but overnight oats, pancakes, fruit salad, porridge, and a lot of other tasty things. Our daughter had a slightly embarrassing encounter, realizing there are many Swedes around. A man sat at our table because the restaurant where we had breakfast was full. After a while, Kira said - mom, it's a little creepy when he looks at me. Then he leaned forward and said - I speak Swedish, laughing 😂. He was here for a week-long yoga 🧘 retreat. There's a lot of yoga here, and as I said, many, many fair-skinned people. You can tell it's a tourist place not only from the food offered; everything is much more expensive than we're used to. What's sold are just souvenirs and low-quality clothes. There are no fruit stands and other things locals would buy. But with that said, it's also very nice for us. As a friend said - Now you have a vacation in India 🇮🇳 ☀️.

A memory today was swimming with my daughter while the sun was setting. So warm in the water. This trip has really given us so many fantastic memories for a lifetime that the whole family can share. 🧡.

After a nice dinner, we fell asleep again to the sound of the waves 🌊.

13 January: Goa - relax

Today I woke up with the sun and took a walk on the beach. Now it was cool compared to the 30 degrees it reaches during the day. There were many dogs sleeping on the beach, and the fishermen pulled up their nets right on the beach and then took out the fish.

Breakfast was at the same place as yesterday.

There are lovely waves here in Goa, so we rented a couple of buggy boards, and the kids got to try surfing 🏄. It was very fun. Then there was swimming in the sunset again and a good dinner.

Again, we'll fall asleep to the sound of the waves, and tomorrow we're heading to our last three nights in Goa before flying to Delhi.

We're on our last days, and we're so happy to spend them in complete relaxation. Choosing northern India before southern was a stroke of luck. If we had stayed here and then gone up to all the chaos in the north, we might have turned back after a few days to the beach in Agonda :)

Our German neighbor has been traveling 🧳 in India 🇮🇳 since September, and she has experienced a lot and feels she's done with India. I asked her if she would still come back; where would she go? Then she said Agonda Beach and this hotel. Lucky that we also chose this place 🍀👍🏾.

Tomorrow we'll move on for our last three nights in Goa. It's a place recommended by our friends in Delhi. It's not by the beach but has a pool 🏊‍♂️ and is 10 minutes away from a 25 km long beach 🏝️.

Good night 😴

Here is the translation to English:

On January 10th - Forrest Walk

Today, we had to get up early again to drive 1 hour to Vazhachal - Athirappily Forest National Park for a day hike in the woods with Gopi. It's his Blue Yonder that has organized the trip. This national park has only been open for these tours for two months. These tours are organized to provide income from the forest to the indigenous people who used to live in these forests 🌳. When the national park was created, everyone living in the forest was given a house outside the future national park. It was a kind thought, but the result was that the new generation no longer has knowledge of their roots and how to live in the forest. Also, there are no jobs for them. Hence, this initiative has been created to re-educate the younger generation about their forest. We had two lovely girls with us on our tour. Then we had the ranger, who is employed by the national park. He made a secure impression with his rifle, which he said with relief he has never had to use. 🔫

During the tour, we saw two types of monkeys, Lion-tailed macaques and Nilgris Langur which apparently are very rare to see. My theory is that since there is not normally a lot of people here, they don't hide. We'll see if they are still visible after a few years of these tours. 🐒

But right now, they stick to only 24 tourists per day who can do these tours. The entire tour is 12 km, and it took us from 09:00 to 16:30. But we had a nice stop at the Periyar River, the same river in front of Gopi's house where we took a boat ride 🙂, and it was very cool to sit between two large elephant dung piles 💩 🐘 from wild elephants. Behind the river is a tiger reserve that will also open for hikes in a month, with overnight stays. But you have to stay far from the river because there are crocodiles. But where we dipped our feet, they said it was safe, laughter 😂

We didn't see any tigers or elephants, but as mentioned, these beautiful monkeys, incredible Malabar Giant Squirrels, poisonous small snakes Malabar pit vipers, and an enormous millipede. We also saw tracks of a sloth bear that had stolen honey 🍯 from beehives. Oh, we also saw nests of the Hornbill bird. A fascinatingly beautiful bird that, unfortunately, we didn't see "live."

As mentioned, we were also treated to lunch, and it was at a "station" where 2 rangers plus a cook stay for 1 week at a time and then have 3 days off. Their job is to communicate with the other stations in the park. Today, their job is very calm, but five years ago, there was a lot of poaching in the park. But with stricter laws and the knowledge of the new generation, all poaching has now disappeared. Isn't it fantastic? It gives hope. Very interesting was to know that the fence around the ranger's house was not protection from crocodiles but from elephants. In the evenings, they pull up the "gangway" so they can sleep safely. So cool to be in such a forest with wild elephants. 🐘

We were also told that they still collect honey high up in the trees. They climb up with a liana tied with bamboo sticks. We bought a jar of honey produced from the forest. We will enjoy it on our waffles at home in Sweden while talking about our adventures in India. We fell asleep tired in our legs and dreamed of the forest and its amazing animals. Tomorrow up early again to take the train to Goa.

Good night 😴🌙

In English:

The 8th of January - Gopi, Dogs, and Shopping Mall 🗓️🐶🛍️

Today, we've engaged in Western activities. We were advised that on the way to Gopi, we should stop at an enormous shopping center with a food court where the kids could enjoy some familiar food such as pizza. The daughter was very happy to have pizza, and Milo, poor thing with a loose tooth 🦷, had some dumplings. It's always interesting to step into stores in another country. Here, it was not so different from other large shopping malls we've seen in the USA 🇺🇸, for example.

It was a bit amusing to see that they had a mini-amusement park inside. Here, you could fit a lot of things in a small space 😂.

We entered a large, typical Indian Ica Maxi where they had everything. I have never seen so many different types of snap beans and so many different varieties of dates, all in bulk.

The next big adventure was at Gopi's place when Milo discovered an enormous centipede in the bathroom and became extremely scared. It was enormous, I agree, and had two large claws at the back. Gopi said that if it bites you, you will get swollen like with a wasp sting 🐝, but you won't die, as Milo thought 😂.

Tomorrow, Gopi's four dogs are going to the veterinarian. The puppies will have a checkup, and the same goes for the big ones. Kerala has, as I believe, a unique veterinary system. Here, all pets receive free veterinary care, paid for by the state of Kerala. Or not entirely free, you have to pay 30 rupees over a four-week period if the animal needs care. There are state-owned animal ambulances that go out and pick up pets in need of care. But tomorrow, a private animal ambulance will come to Gopi and pick up his dogs for a checkup. He chooses a private one because they also help with trimming the nails 😃. That would be something for Sweden to introduce, that all pets should have the right to veterinary care just like us humans – whether poor or rich – have the right to care for our pets! 🚑 🏥 🐎 🐕 🐈.

Sleep well, all the world's pets. I hope you all receive the care you deserve 🧡.

6-7 jan - Lyxig husbåtsupplevelse i Kerala 🏞️🚤 😌🌴

6-7 januari, husbåt i Kerala - Back Waters 🏞️

It's a bit frustrating with drivers who don't listen, but we eventually arrived.

Oh, what a boat it is, truly luxurious. We knew we wouldn't get to drive the boat ourselves, but we weren't prepared for the three people who would accompany the boat and take care of us, laughter 🤭 It's a bit strange at first, but you get used to being waited on all the time. It might be harder to get used to doing everything ourselves again when we're back home in Sweden 😂

These two days on the boat have been wonderful 🚤. We cruised gently and just relaxed. In the beginning, we were in the company of many houseboats, and there was quite a party 🎶 on the first day, a Saturday on our houseboat adventure. There are 2000 registered houseboats here. But most guests only stay overnight, so when they turned, we continued, and on the second day, it was much quieter. The houseboats are called "kettuvallams." They are converted rice barges, very beautiful ones.

Backwaters in Kerala have played a significant role as trade routes. It was a crucial center for trade in spices, silk, wood, and other goods. Now, as mentioned, it has become the center for houseboat tourism.

For every lunch and evening, we dropped anchor. On the first evening, we were alone, and it was so calm until 6 in the morning when we all woke up to very nice but loud music from a nearby temple. Now, on our last evening, we are squeezed between several houseboats from the same company. Perhaps not the way one imagined spending the last evening, peeking into each other's bedrooms. Nothing that is shown in the promotional images for the houseboat company. But it was still cozy and nice. It rained heavily in the evening. It shouldn't rain this time of year. It's a worrying sign that climate change is already visible here. With the rain, the rice fields are destroyed as the plants drown. Farmers are very worried about their crops.

What we have seen these two days are many palm trees, rice fields, eagles, kingfishers, and many waving Indians. We stopped and looked at a Catholic church where there was Sunday school for the children. ⛪️ I wonder how many Western countries still have Sunday school?

At our visit to the church, there were, of course, shops that all wanted us to shop in their store. But there was a Wooden Craft shop that seemed serious about what they sold. Otherwise, it's very difficult to know if what they say is really true. It's unfortunate that one has started to believe that everyone is lying just to sell their things. It's also sad to see all the plastic floating on the water. But at our anchoring place the first night, it was quite clean, so the children and I jumped in and swam. Here in southern India, it's so hot, +30°C. It's a luxury that in our room on the houseboat, we have AC.

These two days have been so pleasant and relaxed. We could hang out on the boat and be waited on for two more weeks. But now, we spend our last night, and tomorrow at 9:30, we check out from the boat and go back to Gopi.

Good night from a rocking houseboat 🛥️"

I thought it tasted really good. But for our main lunch, we went to the same place we visited on the first day; they served very child-friendly food and unbelievably delicious and cheap fresh pineapple juice, 🍍 about 6 SEK.

Afterwards, we visited two weaving centers. One place where women and men get jobs that they might otherwise struggle to find. They weave everything on old looms and spin the thread🧵 themselves. Making a Dhoti, like the one Hardy bought in their store, takes a day. They earn about 30 SEK per day, and the wage is the same for both men and women. For those who don't know what a Dhoti is, it's a sarong for men that Hardy liked because it's very airy and doesn't squeeze the stomach. Although, the kids noticed that only old men seem to wear a Dhoti, which might not be so popular. Well, he's almost 50, and isn't it about time to wear a Dhoti? And yes, he's wearing underwear underneath, in case you're wondering.

During the major flood in 2018, the water rose around 3 meters and destroyed another weaving center that we also visited, ruining all the fabric. But here, Blue Yonder, led by Gopi, had a brilliant idea to sew simple yet cute dolls and then sell them to continue providing wages for the weavers. It has been very successful.

God natt 😴

4 januari - Kerala - Fort Kochi - skattjakt

God natt 😴

In English:

2-3 January: Delhi - Kerala

Our last day in the mountains was 100% relaxation, and the children played with their new and old friends. It's amazing to make new friends in other countries. The car ride down was even faster than going up 😂. We were all grateful for our motion sickness tablets. We were less thrilled about our sleeping compartment, which, even in first class, was very dirty 🤢, but the sheets were clean despite some stains 🥴. According to Hardy, it was also the hardest bed 🛏️ he has ever slept on. I was happy with my air mattress that I brought for my back in case the beds were too hard.

There wasn't much sleep 💤 during the 9 hours that took us 250 km 😂. When we arrived in Delhi at 05:00, we were happy to come home to our friends' lovely house 🏠. We were glad to rest, have a delicious breakfast, and after 5 hours, we were ready to go to the airport to catch the flight ✈️ down to Kochi, Kerala. Everything went smoothly at the airport, except when we stood at the gate and were called up because apparently, we had something dangerous in the bag. It was our power bank that you're not allowed to check in. We had to throw it away. They are vigilant today because we have flown several times with it in checked baggage 🧳 🤭.

It took three hours to get from Delhi to Kochi. A taxi was waiting for us at the airport. We were pleasantly surprised that the car had safety messages hanging, reminding everyone to use seat belts. We were not used to that from Delhi.

It was very nice to see Gopi in his homeland. We have been friends for 17 years. We met in Oslo at an ecotourism conference and have since met several times around Europe and at our homes, but never in India. He runs a fantastic "community-based tourism" agency, Blue Yonder http://theblueyonder.com/.

After cuddling with his lovely 4 dogs, we took a short trip on the river - Periyar River.

Then we had dinner at a restaurant where we drank amazingly delicious fresh pineapple juice. The first time for the children. Then we were all very tired and slept well even though it is very hot and humid here. Being awake since 05:00 surely helped.

Good night 😴

4 January - Kerala - Fort Kochi - Treasure Hunt

We woke up refreshed, and before doing anything else, we cuddled with the puppies, so cute. 🐶

After breakfast, we went to Fort Kochi, where we were going to try a new concept on a tour organized by Blue Yonder - a treasure hunt. We walked around Fort Kochi and solved various clues. A nice way to see the island.

The little adventure started by taking the ferry to Fort Kochi, which was full of forts. It's a cheap ferry, about 3 rupees. On the other side, lovely Naomi, who works for Blue Yonder, met us. We started by taking some coconuts 🥥, drank their juice, and scooped up the meat. Did you know that fresh coconut meat is like jelly? The children liked it. Then the first clue came, and it led us to a Chinese fishing net where we met a fisherman 🎣 who explained that it's hard work, and we really felt it in his hands when we shook hands. Oh, the big dry scars he had from manually pulling up the net. We all got to try pulling. It wasn't so hard, we thought, but then he said it's a whole different ball game with a lot of fish. Unfortunately, the nets are getting lighter and lighter as the fish are running out even here. 🐠 😞

Five families make a living from this net with the help of Blue Yonder, and with this new tour, they can get a little money from another source too. It's really "community-based tourism"!

The next clue took us to the fort that the Portuguese built to protect the island. But for me, it felt very small to be any protection. But they surely had a good plan. 👍🏾

We had a fantastic lunch at a very cozy place at the Cultural Center. It's a place we will never forget, I think, and it's not because of the food 🥘 but because of all the tears we left there. Not tears of sorrow but tears of joy. It was a fantastic art exhibition by twelve girls attending an art school. I got to have different paintings presented by the artists themselves, and I took a liking to both the artist and her painting. When I said that I will buy this painting, oh, how emotional she became, tears streamed down her face, and then my tears started, then Hardy's, the children's, and all twelve girls. But as I said, they were tears of joy, and now we all look forward to hanging it in our apartment in Sweden, and I know exactly where it should hang 😀. The artist's name is Siya else Benny, and I will stay in touch with her. 🧡

Then a clue took us to "Jewtown," where we walked on a very cozy street and saw a synagogue. The history of Fort Kochi is:

In the 16th century, the Portuguese under Vasco da Gama arrived and established trade agreements and fortifications, like Fort Manuel. The Portuguese presence was followed by the Dutch in the 17th century, who conquered the city and changed its landscape with the construction of Fort Kochi and the renovation of Mattancherry Palace.

Under British rule in the 18th century, Kochi became an important part of British India. The city also carries a significant Jewish history, reflected in the old Paradesi Synagogue and the Jewish quarter.

After India's independence in 1947, Kochi became part of the Indian Union.

Before leaving the island, we had a well-deserved coffee ☕️.

In the evening, Gopi cooked the fish that his neighbor kindly left for us the night before. It's very convenient to live right by the water and know the neighbor who is a fisherman. 😃

Before bedtime, there was, of course, a lot of puppy cuddling again. 🐶

Good night 😴

Nyårsafton under stjärnorna i full tystnad

Sov gott 😴
In English:

31st December - New Year's Eve 🎉 with a view of the Himalayas 🏔️

The day started very late as we all slept like logs. It was so quiet and peaceful. We were served an Indian breakfast that we actually enjoyed a lot. The kids had milk and cereal, and they were satisfied. Then we had apples. Oh, how we've missed apples. We've only had fruits that can be peeled, like bananas and clementines. An apple 🍎 can be so delicious.

Afterward, we all took a two-hour walk in the mountains. Very beautiful, but it bothers me that even here, you see plastic here and there. I asked why people throw garbage even in nature. The answer was that they don't see garbage the way we do at home. It doesn't bother them. I always try to leave the nature I visit better than when I arrived. There's a lot of garbage to pick up in the mountains, and you can't take it all. They should have a clean-up day or a clean-up year here 😅

The walk once again showed that with money, you can buy anything in India. With money, they've been able to get permission to cut down a lot of trees to build luxury villas, where, when everything is ready, helicopters 🚁 can land. All the neighbors are very angry and disappointed, but there's nothing one can do to stop it.

The walk passed by some other homestays where the hosts wanted to offer tea, but we had lunch waiting for us. Everyone was very friendly 🌷

Just like on Christmas Eve 🤶, New Year's Eve wasn't something we do at home. Here, it doesn't seem to be a big event. Among our friends, only the youngest son wanted to stay awake and toast to 2024. Milo, who had been playing chess all evening with his newfound Indian friends, gave up 30 minutes before twelve, then he crashed. But together with another super nice family from Delhi and their children the same age as ours, we stayed up with them, toasting under the stars. It was probably the quietest New Year's Eve we've ever had. Just one firework far away, otherwise completely silent. I must say it was wonderful with the silence.

We wish everyone a fantastic 2024. Enjoy everything that is in your lives. 🧡

Good night

1st January 2024

Happy New Year! Our 2024 began by witnessing a fantastic view of India's second-highest mountain. Over there lies the Himalayas; it's probably the closest we'll come to the Himalayas in this lifetime. But oh, how satisfied we are with it. 🏔️

Here in the forest, there are jaguars, and there's also a tiger trail. Every year, a female tiger passes through here, and this year, she came with three cubs. Everyone at our homestay was warned not to go out in the evening because of the tiger. A very strange feeling to be in a forest where there are tigers and jaguars. There are also monkeys here. In the evening, I had a National Geographic experience when I saw a whole flock of monkeys in the tree, jumping from branch to branch.

The day has been full of relaxation, and it's so nice after three weeks with so many impressions. Tomorrow, we take the night train back to Delhi, and on the same day, we take the flight down to Kerala.

Sleep well 😴

Despite being more experienced now and knowing how the entire security process works, it doesn't really matter because we are all equally stressed trying to figure out which platform and carriage to board. The trains are incredibly long, so there's no time to run back and forth. But once we were in our seats, we calmed down and could start eating our lovely breakfast that had been packed for us.

The journey actually started with each of us receiving perfumed flowers. Perhaps a bit unnecessary, but nice. Then there was a second breakfast included in the ticket - warm milk and cornflakes. Throughout the journey, food was served regularly.

I often think it's delightful to travel by train because you can enjoy the passing landscape. However, for me, it's very emotional to see India's landscape passing by, as you witness a lot of poverty, dirt, and dried-up rivers. But it's the reality that rushes by. Though "rushes" might be a bit exaggerated. We traveled 250 km in 5 hours 😂 This time, we had to sit facing backward, and normally, Kira and I get motion sick, but the train was so slow that motion sickness wasn't an issue.

However, we had been warned that when we arrive in Kathmodam, there awaits a car ride on winding roads for 1 1/2 hours, so we took a motion sickness pill. With the help of the pill, we weren't worried about motion sickness, but we were a bit concerned about traffic safety because it literally dropped straight down into the abyss, and the small posts along the road didn't feel secure at all. Then our driver wanted to demonstrate how fast one can drive on these roads and how brave he is when it comes to overtaking. I held my breath a few times. Luckily, both kids were so tired that they slept in the car; otherwise, they might have been a little scared.

Once we arrived, we had to walk the last stretch to get to our Home Stay - Silent Trail Sanctuary. We knew that our luggage would be carried by a pony. We were a bit worried about the poor pony before we left Delhi, so I, or rather, I had packed the heaviest things in our own backpacks 😂 Hardy had promised to carry his own backpack for the sake of the pony. But the 10-year-old pony 🐎 Konrad carried all the luggage with ease. He was neither sweaty nor out of breath when we arrived. Of course, by then, we had offloaded him with about 30 kg 😂 🐴

Our friends had already arrived a day before, so they welcomed us, and Silent Trails had arranged a fantastic lunch waiting for us.

We're just enjoying the fresh air and the fantastic view 🏔️. This is a place we would never have found if it weren't for our friends. They have been coming here for about 15 years. All the other guests we've met have also been coming here for several years. It's a very different place, a bit hard to describe. It feels more like a home, a little chaotic home. It's quite run-down but with fantastic service. Here, you get served food whenever you want and whatever you want, and the food is delicious. As a vegetarian, India is truly a paradise.

The rest of the day, we just relaxed, and now we're going to sleep well in the fresh mountain air. Took a short walk with the kids to a temple. Not the nicest temple with so much litter, but the kids thought it was super fun with all the bells 🔔, and our friend's son tried to teach the kids a Hindu prayer.

Now it's time to hit the hay, but oh my, the beds are so hard. My back won't be happy tomorrow, but it'll be compensated by the wonderful view from the room and the clean air. 🏔️

Good night 😴

God natt 😴

In English:

December 28 - The Golden Temple

The day started a bit earlier today as we've learned that if you can manage to be at tourist attractions as early as possible, you'll have "less" crowd to contend with. BUT it's not easy to get up in the morning for the four of us, especially challenging for the kids - being a tourist is tough, as mentioned 😂.

We took an Uber to The Golden Temple. Uber 🚘 works perfectly here in India 🇮🇳, and it's advantageous because you know you won't be cheated on the price, which always feels reassuring.

We had enticed the kids with the enchanting Golden Temple, mentioning that it's real gold shining, so there were some expectations, but they shattered with the fog 😂 We didn't see much gold; instead, we saw mostly bare feet 🦶 🦶 as you're not allowed to enter the temple with shoes 👞. Everyone had to wash their hands and feet before entering. Headgear was also mandatory, so Milo and Hardy got some orange ones, and Kira and I had our own scarves. Even though we didn't see much, there was a mysterious atmosphere with the fog and the constant singing in the background. Hardy also had a new experience; they asked him for a photo, and me a few times. So, Kira almost got some peace.

Entering the sacred temple, the line was longer than the peak season at Liseberg's most popular attraction, so we skipped that. But one thing we didn't skip was the experience of sitting on the floor and eating with hundreds of Indians. It was an incredible experience. Maybe it's wrong to say, but I felt like I was in a movie where the main characters are sitting in a prison 😂 Everyone sat in rows, and they came and served the food on metal trays. Water came in something I initially thought was a floor cleaning machine, but it was to serve the water 💦 The food was very tasty, but we stayed away from the water, and Kira stayed completely away from the food. She said she'll take care of us if we get food poisoning 😂 🤢.

They serve thousands of portions every day, so they had created a very efficient food delivery system that impressed. However, the kids were not very impressed with today's adventure; they mostly wanted to go back to the hotel and relax. After a Domino's pizza 🍕 for Kira, we took an Uber back to the hotel, and the rest of the afternoon consisted of movies for the kids and a fantastic massage for us adults. There was also time for homework for the kids. They brought a bag full of 20 kg of homework that they tackle 📕 now and then.

The evening ended with dinner at the hotel and a movie 🍿 on Netflix. Tomorrow we head back to Delhi for a night before going up to the mountains to celebrate 🥳 New Year 🥂.

Good night 😴

In English:

December 27 - Amritsar

Today, we chose to sleep in as much as possible because at this hotel, breakfast is served until 10:30, and we like that. Another thing we appreciated, though we're a bit cautious about saying it, was the delightful English breakfast offered with scrambled eggs, beans, and fried tomatoes 🍅. It was truly delicious to have a whole fried tomato, as we haven't been eating fresh vegetables to avoid Delhi Belly, given that they are washed in tap water. So, fried whole tomatoes were a welcome treat. Milo was delighted that they had Nutella as an option for toast, as it's usually some strange fruit jelly that isn't as popular.

It's a five-star hotel 🏨, and it shows with smiling staff everywhere, including at breakfast. However, this time, I stressed them a bit when I wanted to wait for my scrambled eggs 🍳 so that I could fill my plate with what I wanted for my eggs. A new friendly Indian approached me every minute, asking if I needed help, telling me to sit down, and then serving the eggs. They truly get stressed if you want to do something yourself 🤭.

That it's a nice hotel is also evident from the large amount of food 🍲 to choose from, all in abundance. Thoughts go to all the poor people we see in India, but there's nothing we can do about the world's 🌎 injustices. Our journey and witnessing this make the whole family feel grateful 🙏 for everything we have, while we also donate money to charities working towards a fairer world.

After breakfast, we had time to rest for a few hours. We all suffer from various "ailments" like stomach issues, headaches 🤕, and fatigue. Personally, I've probably never taken as much paracetamol as during this trip. Again, I am very grateful for the opportunity to take a pill 💊 so that the pain goes away.

After the rest, we headed to Hardy's number 1 attraction in India, the one he has been looking forward to the most: 🇮🇳✨🇵🇰 Wagah Border! 🇵🇰✨🇮🇳,
the magical border between India and Pakistan! 🌐🤝 Every day, a spectacular ceremony takes place at four, where border guards from both countries participate in a colorful display of quick marching, flag hoisting, and patriotic songs! 🎉🇮🇳🎶🇵🇰 Despite political tensions, the ceremony is filled with enthusiasm and peaceful coexistence among the audience. 🕊️🤗

What truly shines, or rather, is heard, is the loudest music and the biggest speaker I've ever experienced at any event. But oh, what an atmosphere it was, and we got the best seats. We got them because I've learned a bit of Indian style, namely being stubborn, smiling, and saying a few important words like VIP, Passport, Sweden, your friend over there says to come here, and if that doesn't work, you send your daughter forward - then you get the best seats 😂

Someone who reluctantly got the best spot was a street dog that somehow entered the show and confusedly tried to get over to the Pakistani border, but the guard stood in the way, and it was good, for I think it has a much better life among the Hindus in India 🇮🇳 🐶

It was truly a grand show at Wagah Border, definitely one of the most peculiar, fun, and weird attractions we've seen in India so far.

We had a very pleasant driver who took us to Spicy Chilly, a very nice restaurant with good food combining Indian and continental cuisine, appreciated by the children. But the most memorable part was our table neighbors, who curiously asked where we were from, and so the conversation began, ending with a dinner invitation for tomorrow. We shared some information about Sweden, and their eyes 👀 almost popped out when we told them that you don't need to be married to live together or have children. Their eyes almost rolled when we mentioned that we have parental leave and that three months are dedicated to the father. We learned about how important weddings 💒 are in India; it's the highlight of life, and people start saving as soon as they have a daughter. They knew everything about weddings as they owned a beauty salon specializing in making the bride beautiful for the wedding. They showed before and after pictures of the transformation, and they were incredibly beautiful brides. But it takes over two hours to get ready as a bride 👰 When they heard that Hardy and I weren't married after 24 years together, they said we should get married in India, and they would cover the cost of my transformation 🤭.

We almost couldn't find the hotel again because it was very foggy 🌫️. This fog apparently lasts for a week every year at this time. The hotel has extensive security; the car is scanned, and even the bags are checked before you can enter.

The hotel has one of those movie 🎥 driveways, you know, you drive into a kind of roundabout, someone stands waiting, and opens the door with a smile. Today, I've never had so many people address me as Madam. It's "Madam" and "Sir" here and there 😂

The hotel's TV allows you to connect to Netflix, so now the kids are watching a movie.

In English:

26th December
Train Journey to Amritsar

Today, we left Delhi to make our way to Amritsar. We experienced train travel for the first time in India 🇮🇳 🚂. It was a bit chaotic getting into the station. We were completely stuck in traffic outside the station for over 20 minutes, so we were a bit stressed, but this time, there was no option to get out of the taxi and walk. The cars are 10 cm apart when they stop, making it impossible to get out, especially with bags 💼 😹.

To access the platform, there's a security check where all baggage goes through a scanner. Everything gets crammed in, so I wonder what they really see, and the personal scanners we go through beep for each person, but they just keep pushing more people from behind 😂.

The train arrived on time, and at first, we thought we would be alone in the carriage, but that was only because the train arrived 30 minutes before departure, and we were the first ones on. The carriage filled up to the max in five minutes before departure. We were in business class, the seats were large and very comfortable. It was similar to SJ (Swedish Railways) standards in cleanliness and wear, but then it differed. Here, we got food all the time, and the toilets 🚽 were also cleaned continuously.

It's about 450 km to Amritsar, and it took us 8 hours, so we are back to SJ slowness, or ? 😹. We arrived almost at midnight, and we were very happy that the hotel had arranged a pickup for us. It felt safe. It felt less safe when we started to drive because there was zero visibility due to thick fog. I have never seen fog so dense 🌫️; you couldn't see anything. All cars were driving with hazard lights, but only about 10% had working headlights. We drove very slowly, but I was terrified that we might hit a cow or a person. But nothing happened, and we arrived at the hotel, which is incredibly luxurious. We got a tasty welcome drink. The room is not large, but very nice, clean, and modern. The beds and pillows are also very comfortable, so we will sleep well. We are soooo tired, so now we say good night 😴.

Medlemskapen går i arv. Old classic brittisk stil.

21 - 26 Delhi

We have now spent a few days in Delhi, hanging out with our dear Indian family. This time, we are staying in the center of Delhi at the quaint 11 B&B. Our daughter Kira thinks this is the best accommodation so far because she has befriended the owner's dog, Foxie. The owner, Aiay, is a true animal lover. He takes care of four street dogs, and he would fill the entire house if he didn't run a B&B. He and several neighbors help the neighborhood's street dogs, providing beds, vaccinations, food, and now, during winter, extra blankets to keep them warm. Ajay recommended an excellent organization, Wings and Tails Foundation, to which we can donate to help India's street dogs 🐕 He says they do fantastic work. It feels good to contribute money there 🙂 If you want to read more, check here: www.wingsandtailfoundation.in

We discovered that sushi 🍣 here is as expensive as in Sweden but very delicious. The kids enjoyed a record number of pieces at Yum Yum Cha in Khan Market. I had something incredibly tasty, a stone pot.

Over Christmas 🎄, we changed accommodations to a members' club, Gymkhana. A 110-year-old elite club founded by British 🇬🇧 colonialists. One can only become a member if they have worked for the state, and today, it's nearly impossible to get membership. Memberships are inherited. Our friends are members, and as guests, we attended a Christmas celebration on December 23. There was a lot of food 🍲 and a different payment system. There was a kiosk where you had to run and pay, then bring the receipt to get your food. It involved a lot of running. From December 24 to 26, we stayed in their cottages, an experience with so many rules to follow. Old classic British style. You can't play tennis 🎾 without the right clothes; you must have nice shoes and proper attire to enter the building. To the children's horror, kids were not allowed in most places in the club. It was the first time they/we experienced any form of discrimination 😠 A couple of times, we were told to leave because children were not welcome. Not a pleasant feeling, but historically, many have experienced this due to the wrong skin color, poverty, and so on. It was a fantastic experience to be invited to the club, as there's nothing quite like it in Sweden or the rest of the EU now that the UK is out of the picture. However, we didn't feel entirely at ease in this elite club.

What did help us relax after a while was hopping on a Tuktuk. It's like riding an attraction at Liseberg – it bounces, turns, and you feel it in your stomach, all accompanied by constant honking.

How was Christmas in India? As expected, it wasn't quite like in Sweden, as they don't really celebrate Christmas. But they try with a bit of Christmas celebration here and there. We went to a Christmas market 🎅 at Sundet Nursery.

But these days in Delhi were mainly about spending time with the family in their everyday life. We joined in buying glasses 🤓 that cost 2000 SEK. Had lovely home-cooked dinners with fantastic food, laughter, and company. The kids went to a gaming hall, where they spent two hours for a total cost of 375 SEK 😝. We attempted a sightseeing trip to Red Fort, but it turned out that museums are also closed on Mondays in India. However, closed and all, it was CRAZY with lots of people due to the Chandi Chowk market. It was probably the most uncomfortable feeling I've had in India so far. There were so many people, and farther ahead, I saw a few men fighting. That's when the mom in me surfaced, and I turned and plowed my way to a quieter place. We took a Tuktuk back to our B&B, where we calmed down by cuddling with Foxie.

I also visited a general hospital, one of the largest in Delhi. They say the doctors there are incredible, as they see hundreds of patients every year. But even after hearing this, I would probably still choose a Swedish hospital 🏥 because the standard is something I have never seen before. There were about 8 beds in a small room. But something we miss is perhaps all the engagement among relatives, friends, and acquaintances who ensure that the patient never has to be alone. There were at least 4 people around each bed. The contrast to this was when I also visited a private clinic where everything was top-notch, and I was offered tea and cookies 🍪.

Tomorrow, we'll take a train for the first time in India, heading up to Amritsar. It's very exciting and a bit nerve-wracking.

😴 Good night, talk to you tomorrow.
